Highlights of Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024

Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024, organised by Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board with the support from various organisations, was successfully held from 17 to 23 November 2024. 53 industry and public events were hosted by 87 local, Mainland and international marine organisations, attracting over 6.5 million physical and online attendance.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants and partners from Hong Kong, the Mainland and other countries and regions. Your unwavering support is instrumental in making this event a tremendous success.

The Unprecedented Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024 Concludes with Great Success!

Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024 (HKMW 2024) successfully concluded on 23 November. Riding on the theme "Navigating to a Greener Future" and featuring the tagline "Propel Hong Kong", HKMW 2024 is showcasing the strong commitment of Hong Kong's maritime industry in sailing towards sustainable shipping and consolidating Hong Kong's status as an international maritime centre.

During the seven-day HKMW 2024, 53 industry and public events were hosted by 87 local, Mainland and international marine organisations, attracting the participation of industry professionals from around the world. Among the attendees were Fu Xuyin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China, and the ministers and vice ministers responsible for shipping and transport from countries in Europe, Central Asia, and ASEAN. This underscores that HKMW is not only about solidifying Hong Kong's status as an international maritime centre, but also about serving the global maritime industry. ……

Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024 holds opening ceremony

The annual highlight of the Hong Kong maritime and port industry, Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024 (HKMW 2024), held its grand opening ceremony today (November 18). Riding on the theme "Navigating to a Greener Future" and featuring the tagline "Propel Hong Kong", HKMW 2024 is showcasing the strong commitment of Hong Kong's maritime industry in sailing towards sustainable shipping and consolidating Hong Kong's status as an international maritime centre.

HKMW 2024 runs for seven days. Over 50 industry and public events will be hosted by more than 80 local, Mainland and international marine organisations, attracting the participation of about 14,500 industry professionals from around the world. Entering its eighth edition this year, HKMW is organised by the HKMPB and co-organised by the Hong Kong Shipowners Association and the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, and continues to receive support from partners such as the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Invest Hong Kong.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Acting Chief Executive, Mr Chan Kwok-ki, said, "Sustainability - transforming Hong Kong into a green maritime centre - is at the heart of our policy priorities." He also mentioned that the Government had just promulgated the Action Plan on Green Maritime Fuel Bunkering, which includes the development of essential infrastructure, encourages ports to reduce carbon emissions as well as provides incentives for using green maritime fuels. In order to underpin the aspiration of transforming Hong Kong into a green maritime fuel bunkering centre, the Action Plan also underscores collaboration with ports in the Greater Bay Area, as well as collaboration with other ports in the development of a green shipping corridor. ……

Captain Lam shares insights from his over twenty years of maritime experience, further igniting the students' passion for the maritime industry. Story of the Fourth Episode
After several days of in-depth exploration of the Hong Kong maritime industry, the four students have developed a strong desire to work in this industry. To further understand industry development and related manpower development policies, they will visit the Maritime Services Training Institute, and meet Ms Carmen Chan, the first Hong Kong female to qualify as a Captain of ocean-going vessels, and Li Ying, a student at the Institute. They discover that women can also make significant contributions in the maritime industry.

Hong Kong Maritime Week 2024 – Maritime Education and Career Activities

For students and young people interested in joining the maritime industry, please mark your calendars for a series of activities related to maritime education and career development during Hong Kong Maritime Week (HKMW) 2024.

Pilotage Operation, organised by Hong Kong Pilots Association Limited, will take place on 19-20 November. Explore port facilities, witness skilled pilots boarding vessels, and get a firsthand view of the intricate world of pilotage operations!

The 2024-2025 STEM x Marine Vehicles Design and Construction Competition will be launched on 20 November. This competition is organised for primary and secondary school students to promote the maritime industry and cultivate innovative talents through the design and construction of models.

On 22-23 November, the Maritime Services Training Institute (MSTI) opens its doors for an action-packed MSTI Open Day 2024. Take part in thrilling demonstrations, including:
- Maritime firefighting drills - Personal survival drills - Navigating a simulated ship around Victoria Harbour - Trying on firefighting gear - Learning knot-tying techniques

A Visit to The Hong Kong Shipyard will be organised by Hong Kong Ferry (Holdings) Co. Ltd. and The Hong Kong Shipyard Limited on 23 November. Participants will have the opportunity to visit Hong Kong Shipyard facilities and learn about the job opportunities provided there.
